Earning a living.

Having been in the workforce for a year now and having interact with an increasing number of people, it has dawned on me that there are many different kinds of characteristics at present around the office. Bitchy personas aside (because well, bitchy people are a dime a dozen these days), I am more interested in the spectrum of ways in which they carry out their daily workload.
I find it really mystifying that there are some workers who would reach work in the wee hours, leave work late into the night and even forgo lunch just to do up their documentations. Day in, day out, they would be found hunched behind the computer, piles of paper on their desks, fingers and hands working up a fluster. True, it may be that they really have tons of work to be completed but I feel that sometimes one should know when to draw the line.

Having said that, I have heard comments that the reason why these group of people willingly subject themselves to this ‘torture’ is because they enjoy doing work. Reasons could range from being lucky enough to be working with something which you are passionate about or plainly, having no outside life and thus work becomes their life – an activity to fill the void. At the risk of stereotyping, it is in my opinion that there are not many who get to make a living from their passion, thus perhaps, having no outside life might be a major factor for this group of people.
I don’t know what the future holds in store for me, but currently I have to say I belong in the latter group – people who go to work to earn a living. As far as possible, I reach work on time, I take my appointed breaks, I give my all into the workload and then I return home on the dot (unless there are pressing matters, of course). For me, working would give me a chance to earn an income, of which I would use to fuel my non-work related life; my social gatherings, self-improvement courses and whatnot. Stuff which make my life more fruitful.

It would be a big lie if I were to say that I wouldn’t want to rise up the ranks one day and earn a big wad of cash, but with the experience of ‘observing’ the different managers and big-shots throughout the different companies I have worked under, I think that it is possible to work your way up without really having to sacrifice ‘life’. I mean, what’s the use of working so much, earning so much and yet having so little time and energy to roll around in all your hard-earned fruits of labour?
Some people live to work. Others, work to live. Which one are you?

But however do you want to climb quickly? Only the fittest and strongest will reach the top.
Basically what you’ve seen of your colleagues are those that are willing to sacrifice their time in order to get work done. That would make a difference to increment and promotion issues when time for performance review.
But then again, you may think they are working hard, but all they do may be just coming in earlier than you and staying later than you. It is all about managing perception of others, especially your boss or the person who would be doing your performance review.
It ain’t just about working hard, i’ve seen some people who worked very hard and still stays where they are for a long time.
For me, i try to show loyalty to my company, especially in times of my need. I’m willing to spend more time than what i’m required to do my job if it can bring better results in the end, even if it means i need to come early or stay later, people who climb high in corporates are those that showed a lot of passion in their work and made themself to be a value to the company they are working for.

we all gotta do what we gotta do. I don’t know if i am either or. Because before i quit my last job. i worked to stop me from going out late nights on friday and saturday nights and of course for the moola as well. ahahhaahaha. Is there even a category for that? If there is. i’m there, i guess it’s to each and his own eh?
hahahaha late nights on friday and saturday nights? wah.. what time sia you go home like that??
yeah, life is not realli dat easy huh?? i was once like u too, feeling the same exactly like u… telling myself why do ppl work more hrs den the appointed hrs?? dont dey have a life?? however, thru the years, i grew up & got comfortable wif the work & the co. that i am working wif & slowly i moved from being just a clerk & to wer i am now.. i do feel for the job (yeah, its still a job not a career although been working der for 10yrs now)… its like the responsiblities pinned on you are greater den the lower level junior staff.. so which is why the focus on the job are greater… however, of course we cannot forego out lives definitely & must always learn to enjoy the finer sides of it………. so for urself, maybe u shud find a work or a job or a career dat u like & hopefully will enjoy. Think hard about it…..
True what you said Siti.. in any case, i can see you enjoy what you’re doing now so good for you that you’ve found something you like to do.. hope one day i can too..
Hi there
Well, I agree with you that some people do love to work. I guess I might be one of them. lol.
But that doesnt mean there’s no life after work. In fact, I do incorporate my ‘life after work’ into my worklife, to one large extend. Rather hard to explain in a way, and I guess one on another fence wont quite understand the other. :)
Aniway nice for you to bring this up :)
Ah thats the difference. SOme people work to feed their life… but others just work and go home.. cuz life ends after work. Glad you’re not in that pool :P anyway, thanks! come along often yeah!
Every body understands that today’s life seems to be not very cheap, but some people need cash for various stuff and not every person earns big sums cash. Thence to receive fast business loans and just auto loan would be a correct solution.
