A is for Arts and Crafts.

Upon writing that emotion-filled entry a few days back with regards to my relationship with Haikal, I have received a handful of emails congratulating us and wishing us all the best in what I hope and pray to be a long and fulfilling journey ahead. Amongst those emails, a certain silent reader named Mariati had given us a wonderful idea of practicing Alphabet Weekends.

Basically, weekly, Haikal and I would organize and plan activities which began with the letters from the Alphabet in ascending order; Week 1 would be doing something which begins with the letter A, Week 2 would mean an activity that starts with B, and so on and so forth. Seeing that Haikal and I meet up quite a huge lot, the idea of 26 weeks filled with fun-filled activity was a welcomed change from the usual things we do.

Since we were celebrating our 4th month, we deemed it fit to kick start Alphabet Weekends. A, is for Arts and Crafts :P

Armed with abundant materials which we scavenged from our respective houses – from test tubes nicked from Science Labs during the secondary school days to pretty ribbons and threads which the mom had chucked aside from eons ago – we headed out to our favorite picnic location, the Botanic Gardens. Located near Orchard Road, we deemed it to be highly accessible and if the weather gets wonky (read : unbearably hot or raining), a short bus ride or walk back to the town area would somehow salvage the day.

Also, I love the whole atmosphere that the Botanic Gardens provide. Besides the lush green grass that I roll around on (we got a transparent plastic mat, so it seems like we’re sitting on the grass itself hehe), the abundant number of insanely cute children running around and the wonderful photo taking opportunities makes it a great spot to laze the day away.

After moving the mat for the umpteenth time trying to avoid direct sunlight, we finally gave up and just settled down. Food in tummy, we began our activity… and I died after ten minutes. HAHA. I have never been an artsy person, in the sense that throughout the Art lessons I took in secondary school, I have never ever managed to achieve an A (or B, for that matter) in the tests conducted.

So I resigned myself to do what I do best, take photos and watch whilst the better half cut up sponges and dyed test tubes to make an avant garde of an artwork as a gift for me. As I was clicking around, I realized just how long it has been since I’ve boarded on a photo taking session, and just how much I miss doing so.

If all goes well, I pretty much already have a rather well paying job secured for me after the A’s finally end next week. AND if all goes well and I manage to reign in my spendthrift manners, perhaps I can afford to get my DSLR by March next year. My sights have been set on the Nikon D80, by the way…

Around 2 hours later, both of us succumbed and held up the white flag as we found ourselves soaked in sweat; the heat was really unbearable! Packing up (and throwing away yet another mat), we finally moved off to Orchard Road and finally headed of to Bugis to… meet his parents.

In summary, I was a nervous wreck but things became better as the day went by. I love his Mom for being so funny and accommodating, it’s easy to not feel intimidated much by her. Prayers followed by a dinner treat later, we split ways again.

All in all, a gorgeous and memorable day :) Here’s to a blissful 4 months and InsyaAllah, many more to come. Now, time to hit back to the books. 7 days to my last 3 papers! Yahoo!

Hi AG!
Read your blog and ah, the things that you guys did! Unfortunately cuz of the geographical differences between us (haha), quite a number of stuff there are not achievable :P Nevertheless I’ve spotted a few premising ideas. Thanks for sharing! :)

Hi Mariati!
Your suggestion was a really good and interesting one, so why not? Although, Haikal and I don’t really practice it betol2, in the sense that we both think of what to do together, instead of taking turns hehehe! We view the thinking process as a bonding time :P
Anyway, nah it’s ok thanks for the offer :) I think it’s enough that we’ve already got the whole gist and idea behind the book.
Thanks again horkay!
B down, 24 more to go!
