Drinking alcoholic beverages.

If you ask me, I would say that to an extent, I am a believer of trying everything in life out at least once. After all, you only live once. For the past 19 years, I have tried many things just for the sake of it, some good, and others, not so much. However, drinking (as in alcoholic beverages) and gambling are two activities which I draw my line across and up to this day, Alhamdulillah, I remain virgin to them.

And today I will cover as to why I don’t do the former.

Islamic views and reasons aside for the moment, the reason why I don’t drink is that I’ve seen and heard many of my drinking friends making a fool of themselves when they get drunk. The prettiest of girls throwing themselves at guys in clubs, spluttering nonsense, revealing their deepest darkest secrets to strangers and generally being a public nuisance.

For example, my friend A went clubbing with her long time boyfriend and decided to drink. Over the night, in her semi-conscious state, she babbled to him about the scandals she was having behind his back and needless to say it led to a break up. In another case, B drank and made a fool of herself in the club by sobbing at a corner after the drinks she had amplified her emotions. C topped it off by having intercourse with her best friend D whilst both were pissed drunk.

When I hear such stories, I laugh with (or at) them but deep inside I thank God for giving me the strength to avoid drinking. Knowing myself, I could very well be pretty much worse off then them if I was drunk.

Also, my friends keep sharing about how they have horrible hangovers and whatnot, and hey, not drinking therefore sits darn well with me as throwing my guts out happen to be one of the top few things that I hate.

That is not to say that I have been totally clean of any intention to drink. After all, sometimes its the things you can’t get that you want. It’s just being human to be curious. I am still, up to this day, wanting to know as to how alcohol tastes like, or rather, how the ‘high’ feels like. Does it feel any different from smoking 5 Sempoernas at one shot? Haha.

Over the years I find myself in situations where I have been so tempted to try and have a sip, even coming as close to already holding a shot in one hand, but backed out at the last minute. If you must know, religious obligations are what caused that last minute retrieval.

I’m not sure if it’s stated in the Quran or if it’s a Sunnah, but I heard from somewhere that in Islam, if a Muslim takes in a drop of Alcohol, his/her body would be ‘tainted’ for the next 40 days. It is this knowledge that stops me from drinking every time.

This might sound silly, but the thought of my life ending during that 40 days just creeps me out. As if I don’t have enough sins already, hahaha.

On the other hand, I’ve also heard from somewhere that drinking is not allowed only because it numbs your senses and thus makes it hard for one to do prayers and face the Almighty. So in this case, if I avoid drinking during Prayer times (lets say, between 9pm to 5am), does that make it alright?

I see so many of my fellow friends drinking today, and sometimes I feel as if I’m losing out on something by sticking to my beliefs. I won’t deny that I do enter certain places which basically involves a lot of drinking by its patrons, and being with people who DO drink makes me feel ‘out’ because I don’t.

On another related note, I too avoid food which contain alcohol in them, like for example, desserts with alcohol or dishes which have wine as an ingredient. Many a times, these dishes are the one which everyone raves about and being one who loves to eat, it does get irritating at times when I know I can never get the chance to taste them.

Oh well. I guess I have to stay strong and not be swayed by all these. Hur hur hur. C’mon Faddy you can do it!

Do you drink? How does it feel like? And what are your opinions (personal or religious) on drinking?

P/s. I am in no way passing judgments on people who drink, Muslims or Non-Muslims alike. I know that drinking doesn’t mean you can get drunk, and I apologize if I have brushed anyone one the wrong side. It really wasn’t my intention.

P/s. Guess who got a haircut? :)

I don’t drink becoz:
1) Alcohol tastes gross
2) Alcohol smells gross
3) My throat naturally cannot swallow any of it
4) There are no health benefits [except for wine, but drinking fermented grapes is also gross]
5) There are no benefits. Period.

I dunno how true this is, but I heard from several chefs that the alcohol evaporates when wine is used in cooking. The alternative is to use chicken stock. Or grape juice.

hahahha ok so summarised, you think alcohol is gross. kekeke… but i smelled some varieties at clubs, smells quite nice actually. though i think its due to low alcohol content and more on the other ingredients.

vinegar is an oxidised form of alcohol. its no longer an alcohol.

alcohol has a lower boiling point than water. so it evaporates only the flavour of the wine sticks to the food.

and btw, do you know that one of the by-product of chocolates is alcohol? which is why chocolates are never certified halal. but u can eat it at your own risk.

You know bout a story which happened during Nabis time rite?
There’s this 1 guy who was very very religous & this 1 setan tried to influence him to do sinful things.
So setan asked him to kill a guy & rape a woman but setan was being objected by this man so setan decided to just let him drink alcoholic drink.
So the man said, “Hey y not. Afterall its just gona b abit & i wun get drunk”
After drinking, he got drunk & he raped a woman.
The woman’s husband tried to fight him but in the end, the man killed the husband.

See what u can do if u get drunk?
That is y islam forbit muslims from drinking alcoholic drinks.
Well i’m sure u heard lotsa stories from me couz.
I rili hope u will nvr intend to drink.
I’m glad i’m being strong now.

Hey faddy, very nice post :) I almost had a sip of red wine, just to have a taste of it. It says a few sips is good for a healthy heart. lol. But of course, like you, I wanted to remain a virgin to alcoholic drinks!

I don’t really feel left out when my friends drink ah, because i think that rejecting alcoholic beverages kind of reflects the level of discipline that i have, irregardless of what people might say.

Alamak if a drop of alcohol taints my body, theen when i’m sick how arh? The medicines also got alcohol leh… Hehehe but what you said about the chef-alcohol-evaporate thingy, whoa sounds insightful! Not sure about it though, but it could be true. Must ask some chemists liao!

hi peeps,

according to wat I know, alcohol in islam ada yng dibolehkan and ada yang tak. Those classified as ‘arak commercial’ refers to medication for instance. Although memabukkan, it it not taken due to pleasure, therefore it is allowed. And it some cases it is very much necessary.

Whereas alcoholic drinks like beer for instance is definitely a no no for obvious reasons. I know the feeling of being young and experimental and I admit there are times u r juz curious to try. Alhamdulilah managed to stay strong… of coz to each his own.. :)

Hi there,

I love reading your posts and I wish that I can capture shots like you do :).

Anyway, regarding your post on drinking - Strangely enough, pple (in particular orang melayu) who drinks are usually associated with being uneducated, school drop outs which I find is not true and quite hilarious actually.

I started drinking when I was living in the UK and the drinking culture there is the norm. I was a heavy drinker and vodka was my favourite poison. What does alcohol taste like, you ask? It can taste sweet or sour (depending on the type of liquor) but you eventually feel a mild warm sensation. From what I learnt from my Canadian friends, they drink a shot of brandy just to keep themselves warm. I wonder when that is the case (drinking to keep warm), would it still be considered a sin as well? Hmm…

Hi there, first and foremost, thank you for those kind words, they are very much appreciated! :D
Anyway, haha, yeah I think that mindset still prevails between the older crowd but I think some of the young malay ones are beginning to look at drinking as being hip and cool. I mean, these days, i see the kids on the streets drink beer, the teen boppers have their vodkas and martinis on the dance floor, and the rich uns in their restaurants downing wines. But then again, that’s my opinion lah. With regards to keeping warm, i think its all in the niat. If you drink for the ‘high’ then thats wrong, but for survival, maaayybee its okay? I don’t know. ahaha. someone correct me.

I’ve been in the same position as you have been; wondering what alcohol tastes like and what effects will if have on your body, and like you, I’ve always stepped back from it in the last minute.

Fear of God lah. The thought of expiring within those 40 days and not in time to repent…. Scares the shit out of me.

Anyway, I work with a lot of alcohol (the non-drinkable type) in my lab and you don’t even have to drink it to get drunk. The fumes itself can make you high, especially if you’re hungry. Makes you nauseous. Definitely not a fun thing to happen.

Comment by faddy
2007-10-13 00:34:00

Woah you mean on alcohol fumes aja you can get nauseous? That’s strong man. But what I want to know is, is the kind of ‘high’ you feel the same as a headache, or as smoking etc etc etc? I mean if it’s a bad feeling, then why do people enjoy getting drunk? ishk.

The feeling is definitely not the high you get from smoking. Smoking high gives you a nice buzz but the alcohol fumes high makes you sick, but then, I work with 99.9% alcohol; much, much higher than the normal alcohol content in drinks.

Hello.. great post here..
I wud agree with Rehab though. it’s funny, like the way people see drinkers as having all those traits. tho i’ve to admit, I do drink, as a melayu, but I’ve never gotten past being pissed drunk.
and i hate it when its as if a melayu drinking will straightaway be associated with mat minah community.
just that, drinkers over here, its as if they haf this mentality that drinking till you puke is cool. this is like obviously stupid of them. I have a friend who brags about how she drank like pints of beers and got pissed drunk and puked all over. Like dude, that, is never great.
To me, I feel that if you wana drink, don’t drink till you get so drunk, you’re being a nuisance to people around you. I mean, you know your limits, so stop it sia once you feel you cant take more.
About how alcohol taste like, when I first tried vodka, I was so stupid to mix half cup of absolut with like a quarter of ribena, and boy it taste awful. beer, taste like tapai. So, that would be close to drinkin beer if you’re curious. Also when I was in KL, there’s this malt drink, which taste like beer, but non-alcoholic.
whatever it is, if you want to like feeling-feeling, sparkling champagne and Ribena is there for you. haha.
cheers.

Just wanna share. I’d accidentally ate Tiramisu Ice cream and forgot to ask whether this one has an alcohol. After eating it, I felt funny and was very dizzy sia. When reflecting bout it, I just realised I must have consumed the Tiramisu ice cream which has alcohol in it.

But what’s wrong with casual drinking?
What’s wrong with drinking alcohol and not getting drunk at all?

What’s wrong with taking food with alcohol if they won’t make you dizzy? What about fermented food? Say tapai? What if the wine added to the food enhances the flavor of the food?

What if the alcohol content doesn’t allow anyone to get drunk because it’s close to being negligible??

But what about the health benefits of alcohol? It was reported that red wine is good for the heart right?

Hahaha. It really makes you ponder doesn’t it? Just don’t drink because it’s “Satan’s piss” la… Heh. And also because alcohol kills the liver and the brain cells. And of course, a beer belly and it makes your body STINK. Besides, alcohol is a depressive, it makes you utterly depressed after drinking it. So you can’t drink your pain away either. Hmm.

Try reading this article — It gives you some insight.

Alcohol was not always prohibited in Islam. The revelation of prohibition of alcohol was made in stages. During the time of the Prophet there were those who drank so much that they were too drunk to properly perform their solat. Thus the prohibition was made against intoxication whilst praying. So naturally the drinking was done at times when there were no prayers to be performed.

Of course, one can’t guarantee when exactly one would be sober from the effects of alcohol, and as drinking was a means of celebration it was often done to excess, meaning that the effects of inebriation carried over into the daylight hours when prayers were to be performed (and other activities for that matter). It was only then that the Prophet received the revelation that alcohol was to be abstained from.

There is the view that the prohibition applies specifically to wine (and thus not beer or gin, etc) since that this is the drink mentioned in the Qur’an. However, it’s more likely that this was the drink of choice of the Arabs at the time and they’d be more confused if the verses of the Qur’an mentioned Long Island Iced Teas and Vodka/Ribena.

Oh, and just because I love Dave Chappelle… Samuel Jackson Beer.

Hey I’m back! Very interesting lah everyone’s comments *hehee*

Anyway, just to share with you one experience I had with drinking… champagne. I was invited to a wedding… this was in the US… my friends knew I didn’t drink, but they just asked me to try champagne. Kena ketawa, you…!!! So mean of them. All coz I took a sip and my face changed. *LOL* It was quite funny coz I don’t think I even swallowed a sip of it and my throat just couldn’t accept it. Tasted so fizzy and… cannot describe it. Just couldn’t swallow it lah, and that is supposed to be one of the mildest of alcohols. Give me Coke anytime.

BTW, nowadays, it’s cool to *not* drink, and not the other way around. People tend to give me more respect when I have a glass of Coke or OJ in my hand instead of some hard liquor. This is in the US lah… in SG maybe the trend hasn’t picked up yet. But SG anything also copycat, so sooooon it will be the trend!! :D

Faddy, I thought I saw you in the train from Jurong East with a new haircut. But I’m not so sure. Nak tegur takut salah orang. Hehehe. I wasn’t wearing my contacts either. Hahaha. So potek la. (:

About drinking.
My God-brother once told me that I can drink provided I don’t get drunk. So I have to control my alcohol intake and limit myself to only a shot or two. But now I told him that it doesn’t matter if you get drunk or not, it’s still alcohol and it’ll become a part of you once it gets into the blood and yeah, the knowledge of 40 days of being ‘tainted’ gives me the heebie-jeebies. He told me that it was his ustaz that told him that he can drink provided he doesn’t get drunk. So I was like “what?!” and he said that his ustaz used to drink too yada, yada, yada… and that beer is actually good for you in a way that it actually prevents heart disease. I think. Oh and my lecturer told me that if you’re having stomach ache or something. It reduces the acidity level.

Oh but I rather drink something else for my tummy ache than beer cos beer tastes like fermented shit. I mean, it is fermented yeast but it’s not as nice as how the advertisements put it. Haha! (:
& a very good hangover cure is Tom Yam Soup. Trust me it’s great for hangovers and the flu. If it’s super spicy the better. Clears your nostrils and your head. Recommended not to take any aspirins or panadol after drinking.

And that’s all I have to share. (: Don’t drink hor!

I’d personally side with Maimonides here and say that the only worthy religion is one that is examined. We can pray and fast and abstain from pork and alcohol all our lives but without an understanding of the whats, hows and whys our own personal faith simply isn’t as strong.

I’ve seen this analogy applied to prayer and I’ll like it so I’ll use it here. Consider the study of Islam a form of dzikir and a zakat of your time and effort.

“But in the privacy of my own thoughts after several of these experiences, I did question myself: if one was sincere in professing a religion, why should he balk at broadening his knowledge of that religion?” - Malcolm X

Agreed, Zhaki. I’ve always hated it when my mom says we’re not to question our religion. After all, I think that faith with understanding is much better then blind faith? I find it silly to ikot membabi buta.

u probably knw i don’t drink… but its not bcos i don’t want too… bcos of a lesson which i learned the hard way… long long time ago, to make it short, i was so drunk during a chalet organized by a grp of frens, and i woke up at a side of a toilet bowl, with all my vomittus and all, and at that time, i was still having a hang over… and when it finally came to me, my friends told me that i was so retarded and so drunk that night, i was telling my friends about who i like and who i don’t like… and they even captured it on video… and it was a horror to watch my sorry ass state… and the video shocked me too much, that i’ve decided, i should never have had that drink… people do stupid things when they are drunk!!! and i mean, seriously!!!

aiyah drink mocktails sua.

a friend i went clubbing with asked how come i can “go on and on dancing” macam orang gila (macam Duracell rabbit pun ada la tu) when i didn’t drink. well i say, you don’t need to get high to enjoy yourself. lagi best when you’re in total control of yourself.

but i’ve tried food with wine in it. macam takde difference je. sheesh.

Yup, i also think you can get high dancing WITHOUT the alcohol, tried and tested 5 jam non stop hahahaha.

bila dah drunk, the tendency to do the silliest and most stupidest things are very high. by the time dah sober, no use being regretful.

all because of one drink.

so, keep it up faddy. never try it.

i drink. drank la, past tense. not much of a big deal to me. friends say i can hold my alcohol very well. my current bf and i went clubbing a few months ago when we’re not yet together. and i wasn’t even near high when he was already spouting nonsense like i like you. haha. my tolerance level for alcohol quite high i should say. food with alcohol, haven tried yet. would like to though. but my boyfriend, believe it or not, says no to non-halal food. HAHAHA.

good topic faddy! thumbs up (:

hi faddy, i guess its up to one individual..i have friends & cousins who drinks but i always laugh when i heard their hangovers. like you, ada jer nak try, but tak yah lah..

im thankful i have friends who drinks but respect my decision. bila aku ckp aku tak minom they said okk..and my boyfriend used to eat everything he wants be halal or not. since im not like that, he respect it, and in returns he follows my suit.haha. very gd.

my uncle once tell me a story about his friends, not real name, Abu. Abu minom air arak, and my uncle ckp, kenapa kau minom arak, tapi tak mkn babi? abu menjawab, bila kau minom arak, badan kau 40 hari kotor ajer, bila kau mkn babi, takkan kau nak togok mama lemon kan nak bersih kan badan kau? he jokes.

then my uncle said oh jadi klau kau minom arak, badan kau kotor 40 hari, kau tak leh solat kan? abih kalau kau minom arak, then kau jatoh sakit, kau pergi doktor, doktor ckp kau ader 30 hari ajer to live? takkan kau taknak solat mintak ampun kat tuhan? abih kalau kau dah mati tuhan tanya, knape 30 hari kau tak solat tak mintak ampun dari aku? takkan kau nak jwb oh sebab aku minom arak…

tho it make me laugh for awhile..it set me thinking too..

right?

Anyway about your uncle’s story, kawan dia i think kurang pemikiran luas, fullstop. dan betol apa your uncle cakap. GO NURUL’s UNCLE!

I have a basic problem with all antiquated thinking and most of it is religion based. This is the 21st century! You all have access to information. I am 60 and yes I drink. I do not get drunk however…ever! My parents always had a drink or two before dinner and that’s it. I never saw them drunk. It was a social thing to come home from work and have a drink while they discussed the day and their aspirations. Not like the youth of today where every drug is always to excess. My doctor is the chief cardiologist at Mayo clinic and he said that it’s ok to have 1 drink or glass of wine a day. It might even extend your life. I believe it has to do with relieving stress which we all have. Anything in moderation should be acceptable but not everyone can do that. If you can’t control yourself, stay away from all drugs that alter your conciousness. It will only get you dead and there won’t be virgins or Chippendale dancers waiting for you on the other side! Instead, you will come back to earth as a slug! These old religious wives tales were put in place only to control you. Take your life into your own hands. Do what’s morally right. Not what some religion tells you to do. The human animal has built in ability to determine right from wrong. Bet your church never told you that? Go with your gut . It’s never wrong.
