Darul Ikhsan Outing.

Ok I admit I’m a tad slow in reporting the event (which is a surprise HAHA!), and I apologize for that. Since bloggers like Aidil have pretty much covered what we did, this post will instead be my own personal reflection and as usual, include truckloads of pictures taken throughout the day.
The difference in pictures, though, is that most of the photos were taken by the Darul Ihsan kids (God knows which one! My camera was passed from hand to hand I got a mild heart attack when I couldn’t locate it for 5 minutes haha). I have to admit I got a happy tingle up my spine when both girls I partnered with expressed interests in photography, yahoo!
So anyway,

The trip really made me open my eyes to a lot of things happening around, and made me feel really blessed that I still have my family by me. I know this is super bloody cliche, but seriously, all along I thought kids in the home were just orphans whom had no family members thus had to live there.
Little did I know, that some of the kids there have such a scathing history that it really wrangled my heart when I heard the stories they shared :( Being the sappy emotional girl that I am, I really had to try keep my tears in when they poured out the trials and tribulations they had to go through, and at such a young age.
Let me just share with you the story of this girl (lets name her N) I was talking to which really made me open my eyes wide and realize that dramas showcased on Suria does happen in real life. And the actors are real, too. Sigh.

N’s mother passed away when N was just 3 days old, and she was thus passed on to her aunt’s care taking as her father was an asshole who couldn’t care less about her. Things would have progressed from there, if not for her meddling father who ‘kidnapped’ her away from her aunt when she was 1 years old, and made her live with him and his new wife as they couldn’t get a child.
Under her own father’s roof, she was subjected to abuse throughout the years, as they (both her father and her step mom) laid their hands on her, leaving her bruised and battered. To make it even worse, as her father’s condition deteriorated due to a certain disease he was having, the step mother brought home different men into the house even when N was at home.
When N’s father finally passed away, N made the decision to run away and seek shelter from the aunt who took care of her years back when she was a baby. However, due to the fact that they have not seen each other for years, N couldn’t really get along with them and the aunt thus sent her to the Darul Ikhsan orphanage, promising that she would visit weekly and whatnot.
However, up to this day, N says she feels as if she’s alone in the world, as the aunt never did uphold her word.

I guess it is one thing to hear or watch stories like these on television, and another to really hear it first hand from a person who has actually gone through it. It was an experience that I would not forget; just sitting down on the carpet, lending a listening ear to N and assuring her that the future is hers to keep and no one can take that away from her if she just works hard towards her goals and dreams. It was really, really humbling.
I have since exchanged contact numbers with N, and will make a point to keep in contact with her and whatnot. I’m not much myself, but I do know that I make a good listening ear, so I guess I’ll give what I can to bring a little light into her life. Just to remind myself, that there are too many things in this life which I have taken for granted.

My biggest and sincerest thanks to Shaz and Aidil for organizing the event, the donors for their amount of money sponsored, Eja for making the WOW goodie boxes and the other volunteers who made it all happen :)
On another note, I can’t wait for the Makan Kaki outing to Batam this coming Saturday! Woohoo! Miss the buggers already.

anyway your account of “N” very much reminded me of one kid from Darul Ma’wa which has kinda the similar story to tell. A kid i’ve known personally as well eversince my poly years when a group of my cca friends organized a visit to the home. It’s been years since and I’m really glad and proud to see the girl growing up and achieved academic excellence.
Glad to see that you’ve enjoyed and had fun with the kids.
