Outing With The Cousins!
Posted: December 17th, 2006 | Author: faddy | Filed under: Dear Diary | 18 Comments »Before we begin, let me assure you that this post is one of those posts which I haven’t done in a long long while. The kind of entry with truckloads of photos which, I quote, “will kill those using dialup”. Haha. Sad, what. I had had almost zero life for the past few weeks what with work and seminars. Today was all about enjoying maself bebeh!
Let’s beginnnnnnnnnnn! Yahoooooo! (Oh by the way, I have decided to turn on comments for every weekend post due to some of your requests. Have fun commenting! Hahaha! Right~)

So basically today was an outing for the normal cousins on Dad’s side. Lots of walking about aimlessly, eating, joking, laughing, camwhoring and whatnot. The only difference is that we have recruited a new member, Shahirah!
The cousins on dad’s side number up to 12, but the teens make up only about 5 or so. Since Shahirah has recently become a teenager, we invited her along! hahhaha. Welcome to the gang, grrl :)
Our main attraction for the day was the recently reopened National Museum, since Faddy here got so hyped up after looking at the nice pictures of the Museum in the news. Exciting maaah. So pretty you know the place! Sadly it was pouring buckets so I couldn’t take any pictures of the museum from the outside pffft. Nevermind.

The Museum actually has free exhibits and stuff you can do without needing to fork out a cent. For example, there was this huge metal wall where kids can actually create pictures using magnetic wires and tubes with magnets. The face creation on the bottom right above looks rather cute, don’t you think so? There were also gigantic sized games which kids can play around with, like jigsaw puzzles and snakes and ladders.

Then there was this ongoing exhibit, where this painter was in the process of coloring his art using crayons. Yes, the whole bigass humongo drawing, he’s coloring it using crayons. Very pretty and creative ey?
Pardon the bad pictures above and throughout the entire entry, by the way. Cameras are actually not allowed in the museum hehehehehe. Sssh!

After gawking at the brilliant work done by the above painter, we then proceeded to the paying part of the museum. If I am not mistaken, the entire exhibition is divided into 3 parts, History, Living and Other Special Exhibitions.
We first went to the Fashion side of the museum, where the history of Singapore’s Fashion industry was on display. So retro man the stuff there! It was weird though cuz some of the dresses on display look like the ones on sale at Bugis! Kekeke. Guess Vintage and Retro are really making a comeback, huh :)

Next up was the Film segment, where P Ramlee’s films were splashed across 3 huge screens and dozens of thrashy magazines of the 80s (gossips about film stars la what else) written in Jawi were on showcase. I tried reading them but after spending about 5 minutes figuring out 1 bloody sentence, I gave up. Hahha!
There was also a room on Chinese Opera, but I couldn’t take much photos as the security guard was staring at me. Isshkk. I thought the puppets used in the old operas were scary though, they all looked like characters from Haw Par Villa, what with the frowning faces and red eyes.

And then there were the Photography and Food segments. I especially liked the Photography segment as there were many albums lying around full of old photos, along with captions. It’s always interesting to see the pictures and try to figure out what the people in the picture were feeling at that point of time, you see.
Like for example, there was this picture of a newly married couple along with the bridesmaids. Everyone was smiling in the picture, except for the bridesmaid next to the groom. The cousins and I made up a story that actually the bridesmaid was supposed to get married to the groom but because of some arranged marraige shit, she had to give up the groom to her sister. Wakaaka. Can make soap opera you know!

Next up, we went to the portion of the Museum which was rather huge and elaborate that one would take HOURS if one wants to go through it properly. The Yellow thingies we’re holding is called a “Companion” and it’s like our own personal tour guide for the entire thing. There are like numbers to press at every exhibit, so when you press them, a voice resonates from the earphones, giving an explanation or telling a tale. Cool eh?

We spent the next hour or so walking through the exhibits on the history of Singapore. Truth be told, we didn’t stay long enough to hear everything that the companion had to say as some bits were pretty boring hehehe. I was quite in awe of some of the tourists who actually sat down and listened intently to every single thing. Trust me, there were like more the 50 options lah!

I guess for myself, I have to admit that the reason why I went to the museum was to look at its aesthetics and not so much for learning about Singapore’s history, which explains why I don’t remember much information but took alot of photos hehehe! -slaps forehead-

The last portion of the Museum was a temporary exhibition on Maria somethingsomething, one of the rulers to some Austrian place. Haha Ok ridiculous man, that I can’t even remember simple details. What I DO remember though, were the beautiful jewels on display as well as the design of the exhibition. Very chic!
Oh, and I also remembered a Nonya cum official TourGuide of the museum suddenly appearing in front of my face and screaming whilst I was trying to take a photo:

Taken aback, I spluttered out a “Er, ok?” and put down my camera, only to realise that she had disappeared as suddenly as she had appeared. So freaking hilarious man, the fact that she did the “X” sign with her hands. Kekeke.. Auntie ah, I can understand simple engrish you know? :P

After spending a grand total of 4 hours in the Museum, we exited only to find out that it was still raining -.- We settled on the steps outside and chatted for a bit waiting for the rain to become a mere drizzle. So for the next 15 minutes or so, we conducted a huge debate on where to eat lunch, with ideas from Bali Thai at IMM, to Breeks at Taka, to Ayam Penyet at Lucky Plaza, to Sakura at City Hall, to… the list went on I tell you!

At last we settled at Rex, which was a walking distance from the Museum. Walking down that lane once again after a long time so reminded me of Faris as the bugger loved eating there as his family always eats there. Dey thambi, I miss hanging out with you :)
We ordered like 5 dishes, drinks and chicken rice and the bill in total was $97.50. Eeep. My aunt’s pocket sure got hole by the end of the day everytime she brings us out hahaha! But nevermind, we’ll repay her kindness when we’re all working, InsyaAllah.

After another huge debate on where to go next (trust me you won’t want to know the details of the debate), we headed to the Bencoolen Mosque for prayers and later to Bugis and then City Hall for some window shopping. All on foot I tell you! No transport whatsoever. I think I lost 5 kg yay!

The day was then wrapped up by a last ice cream, waffles and cheesecake treat at Gelare by yours truly. Syiookk man. Nothing like Gelare to create a perfect ending :P
So… Yup. That was my Sunday. I think I’m kinda screwed though cuz I’m supposed to study for a test this weekend, but i spent my Saturday learning about Adsense from CheeKui and my Sunday roaming about and blogging. Hehehehe. Whats new?
